8 Harsh Realities Of Writing For the Web
When customers arrive on your website you have a few seconds to win their interest, or you lose them and they are off to your competitor. Below are 8 critical things you should know about online content:
1. Write for your audience.
- Who is your audience?
- What are they looking for?
- What do they need to know?
- What are they trying to achieve?
- What do they know about the topic?
- What will they lose by not reading this?
2. Your headline has to stand out and grab interest. So make the font larger, maybe even a different colour. Make sure it uses catchy language, see the headlines on the magazine cover below:

3. Be useful, relevant and interesting. People are busy so they are choosy about what they read. Point out exactly why they should invest time reading your content.
4. Search engines hate duplicate content. Don’t copy chunks of content from your own website or others. Yes get inspiration from elsewhere but make it your own original piece.
5. Wall of words never gets read. Break it up using bullet points, numbering and images.
6. Write small bite sized chunks not fat paragraphs. Reading from computer screens is about 30% slower than from paper. Keep it succinct and use as few words to get the message across as possible. Short, simple sentences make it easier for the reader to absorb.
7. Stay focussed on a single point. The reader is there because they are interested in the topic, your goal is to deliver excellent writing on that point. If you have a different topic then write a completely different piece and let the reader choose.
8. Use sub headings so the reader can quickly scan. Most people don’t read word-for-word when reading online, and they skip content that is not relevant to their immediate goals.
