Independent research has shown that in the last 8 months Australian home Internet broadband speeds have increased by 20% on average.
Despite the increase, Australia is still lagging in terms of speed, ranking 48th globally.
The reality is the faster our Internet connections work the more we can achieve online. With faster connections and downloads we can do MORE.
In my office we use VOIP for our phone system, the quality is good but increased Internet speeds will make call quality even better. We also do video conferencing and training online, these video services often have a little lag, I can’t wait until those issues are a thing of the past.
The Internet provides my organisation with many cheaper and more productive ways to do business. For all small business the Internet provides an equal playing field and we entrepreneurs want it.
The new Government Broadband Network has already started rolling out. It promises download speeds of up to 1 gig per second. That is incredibly fast. It will be the largest single infrastructure investment in Australian history.

Ok... this is dangerous. Dare I say anything, anything negative about Apple.
Apple sell the sizzle better than any company on Earth. Unfortunately the Ipad misses the mark in a few important areas. From a web-man's perspective, here are 8 annoying reasons why I think the current iPad sucks:
1. Millions of websites include flash animation, and the iPad cannot display FLASH. Is Apple kidding? This is a joke. The iPad is supposed to be a revolutionary new way to enjoy and use the Internet… whether you love or hate FLASH, it’s still an important part of the Internet.
2. I know the iPad isn’t a full sized computer but they don’t even provide a single USB port! USB is an industry standard. Wait a minute, did Apple do this to make even more money? It would seem so, if you buy the Apple plug-in accessory then you’ll be able to connect your devices like your camera?
3. Like iPods and iPhones, the Apple iPad lock you in to only getting music, programs and syncing from Apple iTunes. When I buy a computer I expect to be able to use my computer the way I want. Microsoft got in trouble years ago for anti-competitive behaviour... isn't that what Apple's now doing?
4. On some websites you hover over one button to expose the other navigation options. It doesn’t work on the iPad because there is no mouse it’s a touch screen.
5. Many websites just don’t load up properly on an iPad. Nothing wrong with the websites, the problem is with the iPad.
6. WiFi is not reliable on the iPad. This is critical for gaining Internet access while you’re out-and-about. I guess you won’t be missing those flash animated pages when you can’t even connect to the internet...
7. No camera. It’s 2010… This is supposed to be a mobile Internet device. Every little phone on the market can take photos and video, but not the iPad.
8. You cannot multitask (have two or more programs open at the same time). That’s ridiculous. Everybody multi-tasks on their computer these days. I want to check email, visit websites, work on a document, listen to music… but no, no, no. Not on the iPad, you’re not allowed to do more than one thing at a time. So much for crazy powerful....
The iPad is a great idea and there are things I really like about it, but this first model fails to measure up to the “Apple Marketing Hype”. Hopefully the next version of the iPad will fix most of these issues future.
To all you devoted Apple disciples, stop cursing me. It's ok that not everyone thinks every Apple device is the Holy Grail.

Internet Browser Wars

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has dominated the browser world for the past decade. Over the last two years many users have switched over to other browsers, especially Mozilla Firefox.
Internet Explorer (all versions) currently has about 55% of the browser market. Mozilla Firefox currently has about 35% of the browser market. The other 10% of browser use is shared between Google’s Chrome, Apple’s Safari and Opera.
Because Internet Explorer has been the dominant browser for so long, most websites are designed with it in mind. However due to its popularity Internet Explorer is also the target for most hackers.
Firefox with its features and personalisation options has grown to be a major rival to Internet Explorer. Earlier versions of Firefox did suffer with compatibility issues with certain sites.
So which browser should you use? Ultimately it’s up to you to decide which browser you feel comfortable in using.
TIP: Make sure you keep your browser updated so you don't encounter any potential security problems. Updating is easy:
Firefox (go to ‘Help’, then click on ‘Check for updates...’)
Internet Explorer (done automatically through Windows updates).
The Internet Browser Wars is alive and well and the competition is great for Internet users like us.

With so many laptops in different sizes, features and prices, buying the right one can be a daunting experience. Here are a few tips to consider when buying your laptop:
The first thing to consider is features:
- Do you need to connect wirelessly?
- Do you need a large hard drive to store your files?
- Do you need to play or burn CD’s or DVD’s?
- Do you need a large or small screen?
- Do you need a web cam and microphone built in?
- What software do you need on the computer?
The second thing to consider is mobility:
With the introduction of netbooks (ultraportable and super cheap notebooks) laptop options have never been more diverse.
They can range from small (7inch screens) to large (19inch screen). The bigger the screen the heavier it is to carry around. I have a big screen and carrying it a short distance is fine, but if I have to carry it for more than 5 minutes your neck and back start to ache. Also larger screen laptops tend to lower battery life as larger screens drain more power than smaller ones.
Last (but not least) price:
After you’ve decided what features you need and how mobile you will before you start looking at the price. The more features you want the more the laptop will cost. You can't expect to get a feature packed laptop for $400. On the other hand there’s no point spending $5000 on a laptop with heaps of features if you're not going to use them.
Conclusion:
When preparing to buy your laptop consider the features you require and how mobile you will actually be. With those answers in mind you can determine your price range. The key is to do a bit of research and you will get the right laptop computer to meet your needs.
