3 Basics Of Mobile Website Success

1. Have a Mobile Friendly Website

The growth of mobile traffic is surging, so you need a professional mobile friendly site.

Many designers create one website that is responsive and changes shape depending on whether it’s being displayed on a desktop computer or a mobile phone.  The problem with responsive design is it never looks excellent on a desktop or a phone.

I’m a fan of having a dedicated mobile friendly version of your website designed.  Having a dedicated mobile version allows you to create a site that is perfect for use on a mobile phone and meets the needs of your customers.  This is critical because you need to create a quality user experience if you want your website to provide quality service and achieve sales.

2.  Focus on the Mobile User Experience

User experience impacts a site's ability to engage visitors.

The longer that a web visitor is on your site the more likely they are to do business with you.  So ensuring your site provides mobile users with a great experience improves your site's ability to convert visitors into customers.

3.  Clean Mobile Friendly Design

  • Simplify the navigation of a mobile website and remember to make your links big enough that they can be clicked with a finger or thumb.
  • Reduce the size of your files, so your site downloads fast on mobile cell networks.
  • Remember that sites on a mobile phone will be viewed horizontal and vertical.  So don’t use a fixed width layout, instead let it fill up the available space naturally.
  • Design everything in 1 column, and the user can simply scroll down the page.  This is a significant design alteration to make to your main desktop web design.

Mobile Websites V’s Mobile Apps

If you're planning a mobile presence for your business, the BIG question is;
-  should you create a Mobile Application for users to download (app)?
-  or should you get a Mobile Website designed?

Let’s look at the difference between the two.

MOBILE APP
is downloaded and installed on your mobile device.Because this is a software application the feature options are infinite.  The apps can be found on Apple’s iTunes, Android Market, Windows Store, etc.

WARNING:  One of my associates invested heavily in developing a Mobile App for their business.  After 6 months Apple changed their policy and decided they did not want to distribute that type of business App via iTunes anymore.  BIG waste of money.

WARNING:  Mobile Apps have to be downloaded and installed before the content or application can be viewed.  This can be a significant barrier between initial engagement and actual interaction or conversion.

WARNING: The average life of a Mobile App is only 28 days, then it is deleted off the phone.  So there is a very brief window of time to capture people’s attention and potential revenues.

WARNING:  Another problem with Mobile Apps is even when they get downloaded, they are often forgotten.  40% of Mobile Apps that are downloaded and installed are only ever used once.

There are some large businesses that it makes sense for them to have their own mobile application, for example eBay.  But for small businesses there are hundreds of thousands of apps to compete with, so it’s hard to stand out and get downloaded.

MOBILE WEBSITE
A website is designed to be used on any mobile smart-phone.  All you need is an Internet connection and you can view the mobile website.  Like any website, mobile websites can display text content, data, images and video. They can also access mobile-specific features such as click-to-call (to dial a phone number) or location-based mapping (example Google Maps).

MOBILE MARKETING
If your goal is to offer mobile-friendly content (information, products, etc) to the widest possible audience then a mobile website is probably the way to go.  They are inexpensive to have designed and they can be accessed my any smart phone user that has Internet access.

#1 Most Important feature on a Mobile Website

Make it 'dead easy' for people to contact you. Don't make them THINK! Your mobile home page should include a clear 'click to call' button or link.

A “click to call” button or link on a mobile website can mean the difference between getting a customer to call or losing them forever.

As soon as the visitor taps on the ‘click to call’ button, the phone application opens on their smart phone and they're calling you.  They don’t have to copy down numbers, it’s immediate and easy.

Getting the visitor to call you is your best chance at making a sale.  After all, your visitors have the phone in their hand!

We Love Our Mobile Phones

We have our photos, family and friends on our phones. It’s a personal device that is never more than a metre away from us.

You can now have a mobile friendly version of your website so people on their mobile can easily find your business online.

Some interesting peak periods where users are on their mobile phone accessing the web:
- While commuting to and from work.
- While people are on a lunch break.

Mobile phone screens are getting bigger, but they are still not large enough to display an average website.  So a normal website is almost un-usable on a mobile device.

Businesses that do not have a website optimised for mobile phones, will frustrate their mobile visitors. When a person surfing the web gets frustrated, they leave the site and go elsewhere.

CASE STUDY:

Until recently the charity UNICEF did not have a website designed for mobile phone use. Their web statistics showed the bounce rate (people leaving immediately) of people using a mobile was 80%.

After UNICEF got their mobile website their bounce rate dropped from 80% down to only 18%, and their donations have increased considerably.

BIG TIP:

Mobile phones a limited by a small screen. So when you develop your mobile website keep it simple and customer focussed.

Do not include all of the content from your main website, it has to be minimised. Prioritise which content, images, products and offers you include on your mobile website.

What are QR CODES and how can they help your business?

QR Codes are popping up everywhere and the business of creating a Customized QR Codes has enabled businesses to really make their campaigns stand out.

Quick Response codes (QR codes) are a scanable pattern that holds information like a web address.

When you scan or read a QR code with your iPhone, Android or other camera-enabled Smartphone, you can link directly to a web page, online competition, or other digital content on the web; activate a number of phone functions including dialing a phone number, email, IM and SMS.

EXAMPLES:  You can direct potential clients to your website, to a specific landing page, to a competition, discount coupons, loyalty program or specific BLOG posts; you could share an eBook or a downloadable application, or share a YouTube video.  If you were submitting a resume you could send a potential employer to your LinkedIn profile.  You can link or send people to your Facebook page, or direct customers to feedback forms, free MP3 downloads, recommendations, Google  Places listing, complementary products or services, how to guides or installation instructions.  One of the most popular uses of QR codes is “special offers”.

Many smartphones now come automatically equipped with QR code scanners, so people don't even have to fish around to find apps with which to scan them.  If your smartphone doesn’t have a QR Code scanner pre-installed, there are many free scanners that you can download.

Getting A QR Code
Search Google for “QR Code Generator” and you’ll find many sites and they’re all free.  I use Kaywa, it’s so easy, just ignore all of the advertising.

  1. Go to the website: Kaywa.
  2. Type in the web address you want your QR Code to point to.
  3. Click GENERATE free.
  4. Right mouse click on the QR code and click Save picture as...

TIP:  You can get a coloured QR code here to match your branding.

The potential for QR Codes is limitless.  The use of this technology is growing rapidly and could soon be considered main stream and a must have for businesses.

Your Customers Want Convenience and Easy Access - Mobile Website

A mobile version of your website makes your business always accessible.  But does it make good sense for you to invest in a new website that is designed specifically to be displayed on mobile phones?

Customer convenience is a critical key to business success.  With that point in mind, people love their mobile phones and they’re using them to go online… a recent study by Neilson found that 36% of Australians accessed the Internet from their mobile phone at least once in the last 7 days.

Your mobile website is a simple combination of mobile technology and web technology.  These are two things that almost every Australian adult consumer has in their hand all day every day.

Your standard website will work perfect on a desktop computer, Notebook computer and on most tablet devices.  Full-sized websites include larger images, animation, video and lots of text, this all requires larger file sizes designed to be used on high-speed Internet connections.

Mobile phone users will find it very difficult to download and then be able to use full size websites, even if they are on a larger smart-phone screen.

Creating a mobile version of your website is easier than you think.  The design is simple, the amount of content (text and images) is reduced and the price tag is low.  With a mobile website you are able to present your business information in an easy-to-read and easy-to-navigate website that is compatible with your visitor’s mobile phone  and much faster to download on the go.

So consider creating a mobile version of your website.  If your customers are not likely to use a smart phone then it’s not worthwhile, but if they already have iPhones, Android or other smart phones, then now is the perfect time to go mobile and get your mobile website designed.

Designing A Mobile Friendly Website

•   Start with designing the visual look.  It should be based on your main website, but due to size limitations only utilize certain key aspects.

•   Work out what navigation links you will include.  Yes you have to be selective, you can’t include it all.

•   Only use a few well optimized images.  Mobile screen sizes are small and people are downloading this on a slower mobile data connection.

•   Once your mobile friendly website is designed get it installed on your server.

•   Get a redirect code added to the home page of your main site.  This code detects if the user is on a mobile phone and redirects them automatically to your mobile friendly website.

We specialise in designing mobile friendly websites and we’d like to help you.

Lots of sites have mobile versions.  For example, compare:  www.facebook.com and m.facebook.com

www.facebook.com   Perfect on a normal computer
m.facebook.com   Perfect on a mobile phone

Chances are pretty good that your competitors haven’t got a mobile friendly website yet. Beat them to the punch, impress your customers, win succeed and profit.
